- Location: Jilin Province, northeast China. The mountain straddles the border with North Korea, where it is called Paektu, or Baekdu in Korean.
- Tianchi (Heaven Lake): surface at about 2,189 m, area about 9.8 km², maximum depth 384 m. It is usually frozen from mid-October to mid-June.
- Three scenic slopes: North (北坡), West (西坡) and South (南坡). Each has its own gate and base town.
- Gateways: Changbaishan Railway Station (Erdaobaihe, North Slope) and Changbaishan Airport, NBS (Songjianghe, West Slope).
Plan it in five decisions
- Season: summer sightseeing (June–September) or a winter ski and hot-spring trip (December–March).
- Slope: North for the easiest and most varied first visit, West for the open Tianchi panorama.
- Arrival: train for the North Slope, flight to NBS for the West Slope and ski resorts.
- Base: Erdaobaihe (North) or Songjianghe and the West Slope resorts. Split your stay if you visit both.
- Tickets: book the real-name time slot in advance, especially in July, August and the 1–7 October holiday.

Seeing Tianchi: the one thing to plan around
The crater rim is often windy and foggy, even when the towns below are sunny. Summit roads and viewpoints can close for weather at short notice. Go early in the morning, check same-day notices, and keep a flexible day. If the summit closes, the North Slope's waterfall, hot springs and forests still make a full day. See the Tianchi guide.
Getting there
- High-speed train to Changbaishan Station in Erdaobaihe. The station opened in December 2021, and the trip from Changchun takes about 2.5 hours. See Changchun to Changbaishan.
- Fly to Changbaishan Airport (NBS), about 17 km from the West Slope entrance. There are seasonal direct flights, including from Beijing.
- Via Yanji, which has good flight connections and Korean-Chinese culture, then continue by road or rail. See Yanji to Changbai Mountain.

- Erdaobaihe is the North Slope base, with hot-spring hotels and easy access to the station. See North Slope hotels.

When to go
June is green with fewer crowds. July–August is the warmest and busiest period, and also the wettest. September brings autumn colour and crisp air, and many think it's the best month. Tickets in brief
Entry uses a real-name, time-slot booking system through the official Changbaishan channels. You'll also need the scenic-area shuttle, and on the North Slope, the vehicle to the summit. Prices and rules change, so see the tickets and booking guide before you go.
A 3-day starter plan
- Day 1: arrive in Erdaobaihe, soak in a hot spring and get an early night.
- Day 2: North Slope at opening time: Tianchi first, then the waterfall, hot springs and forest.
- Day 3: a spare Tianchi day, or move to the West Slope for the stairway and Jinjiang Grand Canyon.

Practical checklist
- You need your passport to buy train tickets, book scenic-area entry and pass the gates.
- Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with an international card, and carry some cash as backup.
- Save place names in Chinese: 长白山 (Changbaishan), 北坡 (North Slope), 西坡 (West Slope), 二道白河 (Erdaobaihe), 松江河 (Songjianghe).
- Bring a windproof jacket in every season, and full winter gear from November to April.
