Top picks: see Tianchi early in the morning, from the North Slope by vehicle or the West Slope via 1,442 steps. Walk to the 68 m Changbai Waterfall, eat a hot-spring egg at the Julong springs, follow the Jinjiang Grand Canyon boardwalk, and in winter ski and soak in an outdoor hot spring. Keep a spare day in case fog hides the lake.

North Slope highlights

  1. Tianchi from the North Slope. Scenic shuttle plus summit vehicle take you to the crater rim near Tianwen Peak. Go first thing in the morning. See the Tianchi guide.
  2. Changbai Waterfall. A 68 m fall where Tianchi's water leaves the crater, about a 1 km walk from the drop-off.
  3. Julong hot springs. A steaming geothermal field where you try eggs boiled in the springs. You watch the springs here; you don't bathe in them.
  4. Small Tianchi and Green Deep Pool. A quiet small lake, then an emerald pool under a three-part cascade. These are short stops on the shuttle loop.
  5. Valley (underground) forest. An old-growth forest boardwalk in a sunken valley. It's shaded, cool and a good rainy-day option.

West Slope highlights

  1. Tianchi panorama via the 1,442 steps. The widest view of the whole crater lake. See the West Slope guide.
  2. Jinjiang Grand Canyon. A deep volcanic gorge with a loop boardwalk of about 45 minutes.
  3. Alpine garden and Wangchi. Wildflower meadows in early summer and a small lake on the high plateau.

In and around Erdaobaihe

  1. Beauty Pine parks. Walk among the tall, slender "beauty pines", a protected local variety found around Erdaobaihe. See the Erdaobaihe guide.
  2. Mojie rime ice (winter). Frosted dead trees and morning mist on the Naitou River, with gentle rafting in season.
  3. Hot-spring hotels. End every mountain day with a soak. See hot springs.

Seasonal experiences

  1. Skiing. About 43 trails at the Changbaishan International Resort, with Club Med for beginners and families. See ski resorts.
  2. Autumn colour in September. Forests turn gold and red, and the air at the rim is often clearer.
  3. Tianchi photography. Early-morning light, drifting cloud and the winter ice lake. See the photography guide.
  4. Yanji add-on. Korean-Chinese food and culture on the way in or out. See Yanji to Changbai Mountain.
