Quick answer: Dress for the summit, not just the town forecast. A windproof outer layer is useful even in summer; winter requires full cold-weather protection.

Search note: English sources use both Changbai Mountain and Changbaishan; Chinese travelers search primarily for 长白山.

Why the town forecast is not enough

Elevation and exposure make the crater rim colder and windier than Erdaobaihe or resort areas. Weather apps are useful, but they do not replace same-day mountain notices.

Summer packing

Wear quick-dry layers, comfortable walking shoes and carry a windproof shell. A light insulating layer is worthwhile for people who feel cold easily.

Autumn packing

Add a warmer mid-layer, hat and gloves as the season advances. Morning and summit conditions can feel much colder than sunny afternoons in town.

Winter packing

Use an insulated coat, thermal base layers, warm trousers, gloves, hat, face protection and winter footwear with reliable grip. Carry spare power because phone batteries drain quickly in severe cold.

Rain and wind

Wind can make umbrellas impractical or unsafe in exposed areas. A hooded waterproof shell is more useful. Keep documents and electronics inside water-resistant pouches.

Footwear

North Slope generally requires less strenuous walking than West Slope, but both benefit from stable, non-slip shoes. In winter, prioritize grip and warmth over fashion.
